about

Song written in response to George R.R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones." Lyrics by George R. R. Martin and Natti Vogel. Music by Natti Vogel. Natti's intro. from the first live performance of this song -- "I decided to set the text of a traditional Myrish folk ballad... Myrish.. you know Myr? ... Well we don't know a lot about Myr, but it's mentioned in the book. They're dark skinned, sort of medium dark skinned people who make very sophisticated lattice work.... They live in Myr. I was like, what is Myr? How does one go about figuring out what a myrish song will sound like? What's fun is you get to make it up because the cultural minister of Myr is not going to hunt me down.. I assume that he's not going to hunt me down, charging me with inauthenticity. So I kind of decided that Myr was a little Persian and a little Hebrew, and kind of a little Black Irish.. I don't know, why not. And a little dose of Myr.... The text is fragmented, characters.. I text set this traditional Myrish ballad from multiplicity of character's perspectives and then filled in the blanks... the various characters hear the lines stuck in their head, 'I loved a maid as white as winter with the moonglow in her hair.' There's 'I loved a maid as fair as summer with the sunlight in her hair.'
'I knew a maid as red as autumn with the sunset in her hair,' but we were missing spring, so I decided Spring would be 'I knew a made as spry as springtime with blossoms in her hair' ....

Seasons of My Love – Traditional Myrish Folk Ballad

I loved a maid as fair as summer, with sunlight in her hair
I loved a maid as red as autumn, with sunset in her hair
I loved a maid as white as winter, with moonglow in her hair
I loved a maid as spry as springtime, with blossoms in her hair

As the land changes masks, so follow my maids & I
Whether balmy hot and sopping wet or cutting sweet and dry
Ere my life the good lords fell, I’ll prize the memory of
Each and every lass I’ve held for a spell - the seasons of my love

I loved a maid as wet as meadows, with dewdrops in her lips
I loved a maid as thick as honey, with nectar in her lips
I loved a maid as shy as snowflakes, with purple in her lips
I loved a maid as fresh as seaspray, with eddies in her lips

I loved a maid as strong as dreamwine, with phantoms in her eyes
I loved a maid as tart as cider, with amber in her eyes
I loved a maid as warm as kindling, with ember in her eyes
I loved a maid as light as cotton, with lacework in her eyes

One cup for every lass that I’ve held for a spell
You are the seasons of my love
