lyrics

Do you know the story of
The feathered serpent god above
The land but caught below the sky.
They say he made fifth world mankind.

We’re talking Mesoamerica when they built
The pyramid in Cholula
The largest one the world has seen
For the god of culture and learning

And wind and venus, even time
calendars and all things refined
But like all gods he had to go
Why he left, I’ll never know.

Come back quetzalcoatl come back
why do gods leave you anyhow/ I’d save myself if I knew how /
Come back Quetzalcoatl come back
We could use a god right now

Who needs gods who take vacations.
They leave you saying they’ll come back.
If gods really are human creations
Why would we ever make up that.

Maybe the world is just the world,
and like that Sam Cooke said,
it’s a mean old one to live in,
with big oil-stained seas of dread.

And maybe people are just people
trying to distract ourselves
from misery and the unknown,
which threatens all new kinds of hell.

So Quetzalcoatl might be us,
But with a better way of being
When we return us to ourselves
since we are what we’ve been needing.

Is 2012 when we agreed
we’d finally deal with our fears.
Well, hurry up, make haste, god speed.
It’s been 5,125 years already.
Come back quetzalcoatl come back.
I’d save myself if I knew how.
Come back Quetzalcoatl come back.
We could use a god right now.

Bushwick Book Club Seattle started in 2010 & is run by Geoff Larson. Our nerdy dare-devilry knows no bounds. ... more
