lyrics

Sometimes it slips my mind that they don't always see you in the way I do
All the subtle tests, the little hurdles that they put you through And I'm sorry Yeah, I'm sorry
When I was a kid they told me, "There's a difference between you and them."
They said, "Can't you see it?" so I looked but every now and then
Them was changing into them So is it them now or is it them?

So I left the middlewest just like you left New Mexico
But as any hometown leaver all across the world will surely know
You know you've got the same family you've always had And just like everything that's good and bad

Thanksgiving 2016 I was really nervous go to back
turns out my cousin's gay now they're all wearing safety pins I guess it's cool now I was too
They looked surprised so I said, "I thought you knew,
"That my family is more than you. That my family includes thems too."
So when you say your husband's parents are supporters of the side of hate
for a bunch of reasons that they never can articulate And are not open for debate
Not all relations can relate.

They say that hate is a universal But I'm sorry that it exists And I'm sorry I forget
Sometimes it slips my mind I don't always see you the way I think I do
Tiny little corruptions have their tricky way of sneaking through
I see you smile sometimes and say, "That's fine." I bet it's not but that's our time.

Bushwick Book Club Seattle started in 2010 & is run by Geoff Larson. Our nerdy dare-devilry knows no bounds. ... more
