PARADOX ALERT (p. 50 Mapping Manhattan) You can wager that New Yorkers love nature better make sure you know what you’re sayin.’ Heels and buildings scrape the sky; they’re so high, not from REI but don’t let that be betrayin.’ the inner nature lover you discover in the heart of every other New Yorker you meet. We love our green in the city of glass and steel and concrete. Paradox alert. Because we have less we love it more. Like musicians need the quiet Like sugar on a low carb diet Like nice people at the motor vehicle department Like sunlight in a rainy June Like water in the novel Dune Like closet space in a Brooklyn apartment No air conditioned cars to take us to the mall. Whatever the weather, we walk through it all. The city is obsessed with nature, don’t believe me, here’s the proof we’ll make a park out of a train track, put our gardens on the roof Still think that statement is invalid? Then explain the popularity of kale salad. Still think that I’ve missed the mark? We like our Monday outdoor movies and our Shakespeare in the park. Paradox alert...

In my Florida youth we would swim out the day but then the New York Times Came and stole me away Now I’m dreaming of an Island in a Northern Bay Manhattan - I will arrive some day New Orleans was nice I didn’t mind all the heat I drank lots of rum on Bourbon Street But the streets that were calling me were many miles away Manhattan - I will arrive some day I fell in love with the Public When I borrowed a recording of Hair From the magazines and TV coverage I could find my way around Times Square And even though I’d never seen it I knew I would be terrified by the limousines, the Pekingnese, the white table cloths that occupied the Upper East Side I don’t care what they say I’m gonna star in a play I’m gonna figure a way Manhattan - I will arrive some day I moved from New Jersey to Riverside Drive Then I got in a show but my show took a dive I’m living on the West Side Just blocks from Broadway Manhattan - I will arrive some day

I don’t know where you are I wish you left a map So I could come and find you Somewhere in the past I don’t know who you are But you left so many tracks Up and down my heart Up and down my heart My map of the city Traces the people I love Victories and their decline Loves gained and lost Moments frozen in time Swept up in your mystery Like a blinding flash of light That earth-shaking dance On a warm night Time keeps moving onward But memory calls me back To love someone and have to let them go Wrapping my head around that My map of the city Traces the people I’ve loved Victories and their decline Loves gained and lost Moments frozen in time I can hold all of it The beauty and the pain Right here in my heart And only love remains My map of the city Traces the people I’ve loved Victories and their decline Loves gained and lost Moments frozen in time Moments frozen in time

Wilderness Is Home Eyes fixed on this island Sparkles in the night Refuge from the waters Cradles and reflects the light We make it up together This, our treasured stone Floats between two rivers Where we swim alone This island is a legend This island I’d like to know This island is a wilderness And the wilderness is home Is home Is home I’ve tried my best to find you No surveyor could outline you I’m lost and you’re hard to navigate I just watch and wait and wait A blank map for a new dream From your river you emerge Climb upon this diamond iceberg Before the tidal surge This island maps can’t capture Not sure it can be known I’m lost in its wilderness But the wilderness is home It’s home It’s home

Stop Moving So Fast Have you seen a hummingbird up close? Its wings, its heart, its monster ambition To the people who are still open to the world Kisses are a better fate than wisdom Look around Take photographs What you know is yours But it won’t last Learn to walk over water And learn to dance We're on an island Stop moving so fast This city is a diamond iceberg A brass chest of coins that you bury and find We make it up together You can call it New York or whatever you like Look around Take photographs What you know is yours But it won’t last Learn to walk over water And learn to dance We're on an island Stop moving so fast This is where we say goodbye Home all the more when you leave and return All that you love and don’t want to lose This map is a way you can keep them for good Look around Take photographs What you know is yours But it won’t last Learn to walk over water And learn to dance We're on an island Stop moving so fast We're on an island Stop moving so fast We're on an island Stop moving so fast

about

The Bushwick Book Club Brooklyn, New York

We started in January 2009 playing songs written in response to Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions. We haven't stopped since. We've written & performed songs inspired by everything from "On The Origin of Species" to Dr. Seuss to Raymond Carver. There are BBCs popping up nationwide now. Bushwick Book Club Seattle started in 2010 & is run by Geoff Larson. Our nerdy dare-devilry knows no bounds. ... more
