I don’t have the heart of a soldier This way of life is killing me Only thing that’s keeping me alive Is my dream of the deep blue sea Marching from battle to battle it’s blood and dust and pain I’m loosely tied to my memories of a life that seems so far away In my minds eye All that I can see Is the great Atlantic Ocean Rising up and washing over me There’s no understanding a war It’s an endless deafening scream Keep praying I’ll wake up From this suffocating dream I’d never been more than 20 miles From the place that I called home Now I’ve walked this whole country over Killing people I don’t know In my minds eye All that I can see Is the great Atlantic Ocean Rising up and washing over me Endless blue water Gonna wash away the memory Of a thousand bloody days And dark nights without sleep I don’t have the heart of a soldier This way of life is killing me Only thing that’s keeping me alive Is my dream of the deep blue sea

Tiny Windows He was a tall man, picturesque Soldiers’ will to freedom’s song He held his woman close to his chest Shot through both hips before too long Like watchtowers, hills rose around He never did submit to fear Moved his focus to the higher ground He had a vision – brutal and clear Even through these tiny windows How bright the light does shine But even fighting for each other In battle, we are blind It’s a narrow road they’ll be coming down There’s a devil to be paid I’ll do everything I can But there’s nothing I can do today To him man mattered more than The State His conviction never dim Bloody Chamberlain, he had his faith Six horses blown from under him Even through these tiny windows How bright the light does shine Even fighting for each other In battle, we are blind Even killing for your brother A war, a wound in time But when you’re reaching for your lover A moment that’s sublime Go beyond these tiny windows Light inside these tiny windows Even through these tiny windows Even through these tiny windows

They all say they'll miss it when it's gone. They all pray to their god who can't be wrong Apparently, nothing makes you feel alive Like rushing off to die. They say some things never change The poor and the young dying for the rich man's gain Congratulations on your honor. What good is glory when you're a gonner. I don't care what it's for I don't care what it promises The only good reason for war is to remind you how dumb it is. Of all the things we can do, from Mel Brooks movies to medicine , why is it that not lining up thousands of innocent people to die isn't one of them. Of all the things we can't control, from earthquakes to estrogen killing thousands of innocent people shouldn't be one of them. Things I'd rather do than go to war: Eat dinner with my friends Pet a cat Have sex wear hotpants dance ride a bike ...

Never, Forever Cherries are ripening all over Pennsylvania All that month there is heat and wild rain Strange hot land of elegance and anger A windblown vacancy, a breathless pain There is not much time, beware, prepare Never, forever, never, forever Never, forever, never, forever Hour of decision, enemy on soil Without so much as a drop of brandy Emergency ration against snakebite and bad dreams Not even a spoonful of save the baby There is not much time, beware, prepare Never, forever, never, forever Never, forever, never, forever He dreamed of his wife in the steamy morning "I lie here dreamyly" She was suddenly there, hot candy presence She the only vacancy O hast thou forgotten how soon we must sever oh hast thou forgotten how soon we must part it may be for years it may be forever Never, forever, never, forever Never, forever, never, forever Bow down thy heavens o lord come down Ewell’s weakness and Hill’s illness And the union army blossoming darkly Across the field like a bristly fungus

Generally General Lee defense is a wimpy way to war And the flames in your fire only push your mind toward Plans to attack But to attack in my opinion Will put our little army in a terrible position Generally... Keep it down lee, keep it down lee, keep it down (Got to attack) Keep it down lee, keep it down lee, keep it down (No holdin back) Keep it down lee, keep it down lee, keep it down. It's a sad fact that you won't hold back cuz it's gonna bring our army down. Longstreet I won't let another day go War isn't for the week it's for fighting our foe Won't swing southeast just to sit on my thumbs You want to defend DC, well I think that's dumb Did I mention I think that's dumb. It's dumb That's dumb Ok it's dumb Oh yea Chorus And the union army occupies Occupies the hillside Fighting from above not below With defensive mellow And the union army occupies Occupies the hillside Fighting from above not below With defensive mellow Lets go down to DC Lets fight them off in DC Lets go down to DC Lets fight them off in DC Wait for DC Wait for DC Wait for DC (Chorus) General lee defense is a wimpy way to war But outsized and out positioned make terrible conditions This is a mistake Generally we can't make Oh I wish you heard Me before Gettysburg General lee you heard Me before Gettysburg Ohhhh ohhhh

Pickett's Charge Waves of fire like flowers bloom In the drifting clouds on Seminary Ridge Sliding down the long afternoon To the end He said the Lord will come for you in his own time As if these triggers pulled themselves And the music of cannon fire Scores the scene Where we die for nothing Falling down We'll hold the line Til the end But the Lord won't come for me, not this time We chose this way to hell While the music of cannon fire Scores the scene Where we die for nothing

about

The Bushwick Book Club Brooklyn, New York

We started in January 2009 playing songs written in response to Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions. We haven't stopped since. We've written & performed songs inspired by everything from "On The Origin of Species" to Dr. Seuss to Raymond Carver. There are BBCs popping up nationwide now. Bushwick Book Club Seattle started in 2010 & is run by Geoff Larson. Our nerdy dare-devilry knows no bounds. ... more
