GROWING UP All my high school friends Are off in college now And I get high and watch TV all day And living in my mother’s basement’s really not that bad I’ve got everything I need and I don’t pay And I never asked to grow up So please don’t make me do it I wasn’t meant to grow up Don’t think I’ll make it through it Things have been going south since I hit puberty It looks like growing up is just too much for me I was doing fine When I was still a kid Swapping baseball cards and playing ball But then came high school classes that I couldn’t understand And girls who wouldn’t notice me at all And I never asked to grow up So please don’t make me do it I wasn’t meant to grow up Don’t think I’ll make it through it Things have been going south since I hit puberty It looks like growing up is just too much for me When people say I need to make a move, I just agree with them. But I say, “Not now. No, not right now.” And when they say I need to get a life, I just agree with them. But i don’t know how; no I don’t know how. But I never asked to grow up So please don’t make me do it I wasn’t meant to grow up Don’t think I'll make it through it Things have been going south since I hit puberty. It looks like growing up is just too much for me It looks like growing up is just too much for me It looks like growing up is just too much for me

You’ve never been interested in much of anything in your life. And somehow you grew up in TV’s flickering light. Mom and Dad had their intimacy issues to keep them occupied At your bar mitzvah they said you were a man, but they lied. A embarrassing facebook message to a girl you don’t know. Then you’re on your back by the field goal post. Finally the crowds are cheering you on But it’s because of your Viagra-induced erection. We all need enough pussy for it to be alright. With a little more pussy, you might be able to be kind (and interesting and decent) Without enough pussy, you’ve nothing to offer anyone else. Until enough pussy, you’re no good to yourself. You never had any fun with the drugs you got. Just numb enough to get you hit and get you shot. No one taught you how to live but you don’t really want to die. If you could just find girl to give your pie. Don’t know if you should cry for losing a mom who was never good at being one. You’ve lost your house; lost your money; and you’re still young and dumb. The TV taught you to use over-hyphenated adjectives And to look for ending that don’t exist. All those movie endings, they’re the movies, that’s why Reality is just messing up, messing up until you die. If you’re getting it wrong, it means you’re doing it right. Keep messing, messing up until you die But just get enough pussy before you hurt yourself. Please get enough pussy; it can only help. Will you get enough pussy to stop being a drag. It takes just enough pussy to love what you have.

Pour champagne in your OJ Breakfast is the only meal Go score a little Oxy Cause you love the way it makes you feel Like everything is always just beginning Life an ever-new horizon On the verge of something Meaningful and beautiful and true But what’s the point of trying anything When failure is a given You’ve already seen the movie It’s all been done nothing’s new You’re afflicted by the truth False nostalgia for your youth Raised by wolves or the TV No one taught you how to be Drugs are candy for your head Can’t remember what you said Money’s not the same as love But you just can’t get enough Your mother leaves you hanging And your father always lets you down You’ll punish them by staying In this godforsaken little town And you know that you’re a burnout and a loser Can’t imagine any future But the kind you see in movies Post-apocalyptic dawn So you hang out in your bathrobe Your before looks like your after You can’t help but think that All this will go on and on and on You’re afflicted by the truth False nostalgia for your youth Raised by wolves or the TV No one taught you how to be Drugs are candy for your head Can’t remember what you said Money’s not the same as love But you just can’t get enough Pour champagne in your OJ Breakfast is the only meal Go score a little Oxy Cause you love the way it makes you feel

about

The Bushwick Book Club Brooklyn, New York

We started in January 2009 playing songs written in response to Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions. We haven't stopped since. We've written & performed songs inspired by everything from "On The Origin of Species" to Dr. Seuss to Raymond Carver. There are BBCs popping up nationwide now. Bushwick Book Club Seattle started in 2010 & is run by Geoff Larson. Our nerdy dare-devilry knows no bounds. ... more
