The Wind begun to rock the Grass
With threatening Tunes and low --
He threw a Menace at the Earth --
A Menace at the Sky.
The Leaves unhooked themselves from Trees --
And started all abroad
The Dust did scoop itself like Hands
And threw away the Road.
The Wagons quickened on the Streets
The Thunder hurried slow --
The Lightning showed a Yellow Beak
And then a livid Claw.
The Birds put up the Bars to Nests --
The Cattle fled to Barns --
There came one drop of Giant Rain
And then as if the Hands
That held the Dams had parted hold
The Waters Wrecked the Sky,
But overlooked my Father's House --
Just quartering a Tree --

FREQUENTLY the woods are pink,
Frequently are brown;
Frequently the hills undress
Behind my native town.
Oft a head is crested 5
I was wont to see,
And as oft a cranny
Where it used to be.
And the earth, they tell me,
On its axis turned,— 10
Wonderful rotation
By but twelve performed!

Tell all the truth but tell it slant
A grade to high degree
Words and wounds have consonants
Angels on loud wings
Wash away the scars of lust
Worked hard to make them stick
Silent bombs inside of us
Can you hear them tick?
Cut along a dotted line
Deconstruct to redesign
Afflicted by a cure so kind to me
Or every man be blind
The truth’s superb surprise
With explanation kind
The truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind
Plant the seeds of discontent
In pain I feel alive
The waning harvest moon is spent
Too bright for our infirm delight

The Bushwick Book Club Brooklyn, New York
We started in January 2009 playing songs written in response to Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions. We haven't stopped since. We've written & performed songs inspired by everything from "On The Origin of Species" to Dr. Seuss to Raymond Carver. There are BBCs popping up nationwide now. Bushwick Book Club Seattle started in 2010 & is run by Geoff Larson. Our nerdy dare-devilry knows no bounds. ... more
